Mining Journal reported today that Gold Fields [[GFI]] announced a plan to layoff 1,500 workers at mines in South Africa due to downsizing operations. “Oupa Komane, the deputy general secretary of South Africa’s biggest union, the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM), said the union had resisted the move,” reported the Mining Journal.
